Like this Price, the customer is usually right??

Let me start with a disclaimer – I would be rubbish working in the customer service industry where you have to be nice to people all of the time. In fact, my experience of a Saturday job working in WHSmiths (chatted to Billy Idol about that #rockandroll) where I told one man, who’d been browsing magazines (not ‘those’ magazines!!) for half an hour that we weren’t a library. Or when the person asked where the pens were, and I said ‘”you see the big sign on the wall that says ‘pens’, well, they’re there”…. Or in the bar at Uni where I refused to serve Murphys as it took too long to pour and made people wait to be served by another member of staff – all kind of prove a customer facing role wasn’t really for me!!! Therefore the choice of being an accountant, where I can bury myself in numbers, accounts and computer screens was much better for the world at large.

However, as a consumer, and a regular consumer of lots of nice things, I recognise the importance of customer service by those who’ve chosen that career path.

This week I experienced good and bad customer service within hours of each other. As I’ve mentioned (a lot – I am REALLY milking this!) I was 40 earlier this year. On the day the husband and I celebrated at a brilliant Bistro in Brum. The staff were attentive, the cocktails exquisite, the wine list excellent, the food amazing – and yes, they even wrote Happy 40th Birthday in chocolate on a plate – what more could a girl want on her big birthday!! Perfect customer service.

40th birthday

Well, this week we’d booked a table at supposedly one of THE restaurants in central Birmingham (co-incidentally the posher sibling of the one we went to on the actual day) as my staff had bought me a substantial voucher as a 40th gift. I was VERY excited about the whole thing. Husband and I decided to make a night of it and booked a room at a nearby hotel so we could both enjoy the tasting menu and accompanying wines.

However, when we got to the restaurant we were told they were fully booked and they didn’t have our booking. Whether it was the front of house member of staff’s youth, or the fact that English was not his first language I don’t know – but his manner was rude and offhand and made me feel like something he’d scraped off his shoe! He asked if I’d got confused and actually booked the bistro? Or bought a Living Social voucher rather than booking a table with them? All the time being very superior (I thought my new faux fur coat was well classy – but it appeared he thought I was local ‘celeb’ White Dee from Benefits Street or one of her mates). I offered to go back to the hotel to get the printout of our confirmation –  to which he agreed.  Obviously on the walk back I had a slight panic that my usually efficient self had booked the wrong date or restaurant and I’d decided if that was the case I’d phone the husband and get him to walk out rather than me having the shame of going back in!  But no – I was vindicated and had made the booking correctly! But  when the staff member saw it there was no apology, just ‘well, our system doesn’t agree’ and ‘you need to book 3 months in advance for a table here’ like I’d been fabricating the print out in the 5 minutes it had taken me to return to the hotel to get it from my bag.

I should probably put in a second disclaimer here – my period had just started – but at this point I cried.

I’d been soooo looking forward to this meal, tweeted about it in the afternoon, and I was being made to feel like I didn’t deserve to have set foot in a Michelin starred restaurant and didn’t understand how it worked.  At this point the manager was LOVELY – and offered to try and sort stuff out, but it was too late, I’d been made to feel like ‘a piece of sh*t’ in my exact words (later to be thrown back at me by the eponymous owner on Twitter as swearing at his staff was ‘not cool’).  The manager wanted us to stay (although not sure where as they were fully booked), but I felt rubbish – all because that first customer facing front of house person, who has clearly chosen a customer service career path, got it so totally wrong.  No apology, no ‘let me see what I can do’ – just – you’re wrong, there is no space here, and the computer says no. The lovely manager gave me the funds for my voucher, and we went across the road and had a great meal at a restaurant we’ve been to many times before.  The owner of the first restaurant did call and leave a message on my mobile to see if he could sort the problem out – but we’d already ordered at the new venue.  Then a slight Twitter spat ensued – admittedly correcting his grammar on Twitter was probably a little petty (and he could correct my cooking skills indefinitely) but it all left a rather sour taste in the mouth.  This is my bad customer service experience.

Now – the hotel we stayed in was brilliant!  I’d booked directly rather than through a broker website (as I read on a hotel insider’s blog somewhere that this usually results in the best rooms being allocated!) Sure enough this worked – and we were given a fabulous. enormous corner room on the first floor. But – this is Central Birmingham in the run up to Christmas – so there were revelers outside the window until the early hours – and we also appeared to be on a route for skip lorries to a 24 building site in town so the noise was not great and not much sleep was had.  I mentioned this – in a factual not moany way – at check out, and said if we stayed again we’d book a room on a higher floor.  And the lovely man on reception (interestingly also young and with English not as his first language) offered to deduct the cost of the mini bar wine we’d had the night before by way of compensation!  The noise was not the hotel’s fault at all – but this small gesture of excellent customer service left me with a warm feeling about the whole experience.

Customer facing staff are so important – and you never get a second chance to make a first impression………

Not sponsored by John Lewis!

A while ago one of my best friends lost loads of weight, had her first personal stylist session at John Lewis and now always looks FAB! (You know who you are!!!) So I promised myself that when I’d got back to pre baby weight (I managed it when the second baby was 3 years old – but have failed miserably after children 3 and 4!) that I would do the same. However, I realised a couple of months ago, that potentially it was more important to dress the chubby me appropriately – and so before our trip to New York, booked myself in for a 2 hour session at our local John Lewis store.  (I know other stores offer the same service – Debenhams and Top Shop being two – but I like the wide variety of brands offered by John Lewis – and as my sisters think our house should be sponsored by John Lewis given how much we buy from there – may as well say the same about the contents of my wardrobe too!!)

The 2 hour slot is free (there are various other options available – but I thought this would suit me best) and I arrived quite nervous but excited!  There is basically a room off the lingerie section (in the Solihull store) with some comfy chairs, and then individual changing rooms in there too.  The lovely personal stylist lady chatted to me about what I was shopping for – and about my size – and then she headed off to the shopfloor.  I sat chatting to two other ladies who were going through the same process.  It seems there is a massive cross section of people who go in for this – and as a just 40 something – I was pretty much mid age range.

The stylist came back with armfuls of clothes and I started the trying on.  For this I was in my own changing room – so wasn’t having to strip in front of other people (something I had been a bit nervous about beforehand).  And the outfits were FABULOUS!  It made me try things I would never have chosen myself – and from an eclectic mix of brands – Phase Eight trousers / Oasis top / Mint Velvet jacket – with John Lewis own brand scarf and necklace – perfect!

I tried on lots – and I have to say after 2 hours was exhausted of getting into and out of  things – but I was delighted with the results.  I managed to spend A LOT (although dwarfed by what my husband spent in Clements and Church the next day!!) and here are a couple of the outfits.

I am really chuffed with these (although the 9 year old just looked over my shoulder and asked if the second picture was his Nan – my Mum!……….)

I would really like to go back in the future – either for a new season’s wardrobe – or when I’ve FINALLY managed to shift some weight!!

This is definitely not a sponsored post – but I would be more than open to offers!!  Hey – a free hot drink and cake with my ‘My John Lewis’ card and I’m happy!!

The Prices do Blenheim Palace

Back in July we went to Blenheim Palace for the day to meet up with some of my old Uni mates. Basically this involved sitting in the Pleasure Gardens drinking champagne all afternoon whilst the children had a ball in the maze and on the adventure playground! However, you can upgrade your one day pass for an annual pass, so we did this – planning to go again and see more of what the huge estate had to offer.

Today was the husband’s birthday (43 – although he was convinced yesterday he was only going to be 42!!) – and his destination of choice for the day was Blenheim Palace.

When we got there I immediately upgraded my annual pass to a ‘privilege pass’ for the grand total of £5. You are then entitled to 15% off in the various restaurants and shops – and with 4 kids, this has more than paid for itself in one visit!!

We hopped on the train (rebranded a ‘spooky train’ as it goes through a shed with some halloween gubbins draped around it!) from the Palace Station down to the Pleasure Gardens (it costs 50p for a single journey for over 5s). Again we did the maze – nothing quite instills fear like a 2 year old announcing ‘Mummy, I need a wee’ in the middle of the maze!! Thank goodness for the fold up potty. And the kids (and big kids!) all enjoyed the adventure playground. We also used the sundial today (typical in British weather terms that we could use it in October but not in July!!) and found out that it can’t cope with changing from British Summer Time yesterday – but would have been spot on last week!! We also went through the butterfly house (well, everyone else did – I looked after the pushchair and bags as I’m not a huge fan of flying things!!)

We tried to go for lunch in the cafe over at The Pleasure Gardens but it was RAMMED (sunny day for the first day of half term meant there were thousands of people there!)

There was quite a wait for the next train back so we walked – and I am so pleased that we did. There are some AMAZING trees in the grounds which all of the children really enjoyed climbing – we got some ace pictures too.

P1020223

P1020205

We tried to do an arty ‘everyone throw leaves in the air at the count of 3’ photos – but the 9 year old decided to chuck his leaves directly into the face of his 11 year old sister and so a HUGE strop ensued!!

P1020185

We made it to the Palace and stopped for lunch there – which was pricey and there wasn’t much choice – but the kids coped with crisps and cake – they have been taught well!! But everyone was tired and bit a grumpy, so we headed home – and STILL haven’t done the palace itself! Oh well – the tickets are valid until July 2015 so plenty of time for a return visit.

It was a lovely Autumnal day out – and reminds us what a green and pleasant land we live in. Thanks for a lovely day Blenheim – we’ll be back!

Lucky Lifebox Libby!

A few weeks ago I entered a competition on the Sticky Fingers blog – and won it!!  I should put in a disclaimer at this point – as I actually do know Tara – the Queen of Sticky Fingers – in real life.  This was a totally legit, drawn by rafflecopter competition – and a complete fluke that my entry – of the 416 – won!!  I was delighted when Tara emailed to check my postal address (see, we don’t know each other THAT well!) for the Junior Lifebox prize to be sent to.  I then had an email from the lovely Jenny at Lifebox  and she said that they were based really close by – so could she drop the first box over.  I had envisaged welcoming her in open arms, having fabulous photos taken ready to share them on here – but instead the Price family had had a very surprising lie in, I had wet hair, no make up on and was wearing my dressing gown – so you’ll have to make do with these photos of the fabulous box and its contents instead!

Now we have A LOT of potential testers in the Price family – and all were put to work on the various contents – so here goes! (It was just after bath time – hence wet hair and pjs as a look – thankfully you’ve only got photos of the kids – not me and the husband!!)

Rebel Kitchen Coconut Mylk

We are a house of chocolate milk lovers – so this dairy free alternative – made with coconut milk instead of cows milk – had a lot to live up to – but the votes from the 2 and 9 year olds was that it was DELICIOUS (I have to say this 40 year old had a slurp too and thought it was yummy!)

photo 3 photo 4

 Nakdraisins

These were again tested by the 9 year old and the 2 year old – and I have to say neither were particular fans!  The raisins were lemon infused and quite strong.  Thankfully husband and I thought they were lush and polished them off!  I’ll definitely investigate the other flavours though – as all the kids love raisins and it’s nice to spice them up a bit.

photo 1 photo 1

 Clearspring Fruit On The G

This time the 4 year old stepped up as tester.  She is a big fan of fruit pouches, and so knows the market in this area well.  This was an apple and mango one and got a definite thumbs up – and was described as nicer than her normal ones!!  And to stick my oar in too – I was impressed this had NO EVIL BANANA in it – it is amazing how many of these types of things have a particular flavour given, but neglect to mention that they have other fruits as fillers – generally banana – which I can taste in the smallest quantity.  This was apple + mango = fabulous.

photo 2

Conscious Raw Chocolate Bar

And now time for the eldest to step into the frame – an 11 year old tester!  She saw the word chocolate and decided to go for this one!  Although on reading it was dairy and sugar free started to turn her nose up.  Her actual description after one small piece was ‘Eurgh, it’s like a mouldy Quality Street’ – which I am guessing won’t be used as a marketing strapline!  Undeterred the 9 year old tried it, and said it was lovely -but so rich you couldn’t eat much of it at once.  I *may* have disproved this theory by polishing off the rest of the bar from the fridge this afternoon……….

photo 2

 Inspiral Superfood Bites

This was an acai berry bite – and the 11 year old wanted to try this (to take away the taste of the chocolate bar!!) Apparently it was delicious and her favourite thing.

photo 3

We still have the ‘Lifebox Junior Nuts on the Go – Raw Almonds and Mulberries’ to try – and then the very exciting recipe to make!  This is called the ‘Trial Size Lifebox Goodness Gracious Snack Balls Mix’ – which using the recipe card enclosed, and some of the coconut water and some vanilla extract – we should be able to rustle up some mini snacks that can keep in the fridge or freezer (if they last that long!)  These are on the to do list for this weekend!

photo 4

Overall

So the Junior Lifebox has been a big success – lots of interesting things to try that I am sure I wouldn’t have got the kids to chose if they hadn’t been in a special box delivered to the door!  Excellent for keeping you on track healthwise – but interesting and feel like treats too! Our only issue is too many pesky kids – so they end up fighting over the contents.  Guess we’ll just have to order more than one in the future!!

It’s also a great way to taste different things which you may want to buy more of  (I have already scoped out that Ocado sell quite a few of these products – and in larger sizes too!).

We luckily won a 3 month supply – so it will be interesting to see how November and December compare.

A big thank you to Lifebox and Sticky Fingers from the Price family! xxxxxx

New York – by 2 parents off the leash for 4 days!!

As a belated 40th birthday present for my husband – earlier this month we headed off to New York for 4 days and nights – leaving our 4 children at home (they were supervised!) I thought I would share with you our experiences and top tips for parents being let of the parenting leash for a few days!!

1. Enjoy the holiday from the moment you leave the house.  No ‘are we nearly there yet’ on the way to the airport – and even stopping at the drive thru Starbucks at the Welcome Break service station on the way to Heathrow was a special treat when it was just for the 2 of us and no one was arguing about the fact they’d got the wrong frappucino / smaller slice of cake / whipped cream on their hot chocolate when they’d decided they didn’t want it – despite having always had it before!

2. Make use of all freebies on offer.  We’d cashed in our British Airways Avios points and so were only paying taxes and charges – but flying First Class.  This meant we got to go in the very exclusive ‘Concorde Room’ at Heathrow (and at JFK on the way back).  This was fabulous – champagne, massage in the spa, uninterrupted newspaper reading, wifi so the husband could work (this will be a recurring theme – we have our own business, we never truly escape!), amazing food – in fact I would probably have enjoyed just staying in that lounge for the whole 4 days!

Concorde Room - with vintage champagne!
Concorde Room – with vintage champagne!

3. Find the optimum food / film / sleep ratio on the plane. The husband (and in fact the son, must be a male Price thing) can fall asleep instantly when he gets on a plane.  I, however, am my mother’s daughter – and like to get my money’s worth – even when it was a bargain flight for us (the flights would have been £19,000 if we’d paid – wow!!!) Therefore food and drink has to be consumed before I can drop off to sleep.  As you would expect in First Class on Britain’s flagship carrier, the service, food and drink were impeccable – and being able to enjoy these whilst watching a film uninterrupted by little people (why do kids like going to the toilets so much on planes?) was BLISS.  However, one film in, I turned my chair into a completely flat bed (showing off now!) and slept until nearly landing – perfection.

4. Be lovely to the hotel staff at check in. We got to the hotel at midnight – not the best time for anyone to be at their best – so even though the reception staff were a bit grumpy, we were sweetness and light!  The bell boy who helped with our luggage was perhaps the chirpiest person ever at that time of night (it worked, we tipped him well!)

5. Jet lag is your friend. The next morning husband was up early to deal with emails / clients back in the UK. There are 2 photos that I could have posted here – one where he was totally naked, and this one (from the next day) where, thankfully, he was dressed!

Working pre sunrise!
Working pre sunrise!

Even with his pitstop for work, we were still out and about early each day.  We had paid to ‘skip the line’ at the Empire State Building – but our early arrival meant this was completely unnecessary! (Although I think it would have been very useful if we’d arrived later in the day)

So 'skip the line' was like totally worth it.............
So ‘skip the line’ was like totally worth it………….

6. See your destination through as many possible mediums / media (haven’t done Latin for years).  We had pre booked loads of things with British Airways before heading off (as I like to be as organised as possible!) so we saw New York by air (in a helicopter, I vommited afterwards, but it was amazing!)

Yeah - I was totally calm pre helicopter trip......
Yeah – I was totally calm pre helicopter trip……

By water – on a cruise (it was chilly on the water, layers is definitely the way forward when dressing for New York)

Tourists on board a river cruise

By skyscraper – we went up the Empire State Building (mostly because husband is a film buff and wanted to re-enact Sleepless in Seatlle or such like!)  We were incredibly lucky with the weather and the views were amazing!

The view South from the Empire State Building

By horsedrawn carriage – we were typical tourists and did the trip round Central Park – and it was great fun.  Not only is the park an oasis of calm in the midst of Manhattan – you recognise loads of it from films and TV shows.

By yellow taxi – well, it’s a must really isn’t it!

7. Learn stuff.  Without the kids in tow dragging you to look at stuff / needing a wee / demanding a drink it was possible to actually read about exhibits and listen to commentary both on the helicopter and boat trips, and also up the Empire State Building and at the American Museum of Natural History (from the film ‘Night at the Museum’).  The Empire State Building was really, really interesting (although this could be because we run a construction company so are both geeks about such things!)

Being a girlie swot listening to all of the information posts!

We were less impressed with the American Museum of Natural History – it just felt a bit dry, and not a patch on what London has to offer in this regard.

8. Keep your eyes peeled for famous stuff / people.  Our Central Park tour guide took us to the fountain from the start of Friends! I’m not sure we would have found it on our own – and we were very excited as you can see!

The fountain at the start of Friends
The fountain at the start of Friends

One evening we got into the lift and a short bloke with white blonde spiky hair asked us where we were from.  I replied ‘Birmingham, in the UK’ to which his response (in a mid Atlantic accent) was ‘Oh, my Dad is from Acocks Green’ – which is a not very salubrious suburb of Birmingham – and I told him how I’d worked in a branch of WH Smiths there as a teenager.  Then we got out the lift and he wished us a good stay in New York. I turned to the husband and said ‘wasn’t that man familiar?’ – to which an American lady – who had been struck mute in the lift, said ‘OMG that was Billy Idol’!! Still gutted I didn’t get a selfie and instead told him about my Saturday job #starspottingfail

9. Enjoy the little things. I suspect like many parents, lots of the simple pleasures of yesteryear are long forgottent!  You’re not going to ‘waste’ a babysitter on going to the cinema, or sitting in a bar drinking and reading a book for a few hours.  Well we did both of these things!!  We went to see Gone Girl at the cinema (which was handily next door to our hotel) and then sat in  the amazing bar at The Hudson Hotel for a few hours on two afternoons!  The DJ in there on the Saturday afternoon was playing loads of 1980s / 90s dance.  She was about 20 – so it was probably ironically trendy for her – but we were in our element!!

In the Hudson Bar
In the Hudson Bar

10.Shopping. Most people rave about the shopping in New York – and there are, admittedly, a lot of shops – but we think that the UK has come on in leaps and bounds with regard to shopping in the last decade or so – and that, combined with a far less beneficial exchange rate as years ago, meant it wasn’t as much of as a big deal as we’d expected.  Husband in particular was gutted with the legendary toy shop FAO Shwarz (from the film Big – as you can see, most of his reference points were movie related!), as it’s no Hamleys!

FAO Shwarz
FAO Shwarz

We also both described Macy’s as Rackhams on steroids!  This will only mean something to Brummies of a certain age (for everyone else, substitute Rackams with a House of Fraser store!)

11. Enjoy just being a couple and being reminded of why you wanted to be together in the first place!  We had both lived a lot before we married each other (and I mean a lot!) but within 15 months of meeting we were married with our first (of four!) children.  We haven’t let having the kids hamper our travelling and experiences – but equally, we try to make time to ‘be together’ (obviously said in a really Brummie accent, like that old advert!).  It’s not always as flash as New York (although let’s face it, we do try!) but even one date night together is a great break from the old routine.

There you have it – a brief run down and edited highlights of the photos of our 4 days and nights in New York!!

Film Review – Gone Girl

A couple of weeks ago I FINALLY got round to reading Gone Girl – possibly the last person in the entire country to read it!!

Gone Girl

Husband and I are in New York this week (plenty more blog posts about that to come – bet you can’t wait?!) but tonight – having done loads of tourist and shopping stuff, we decided to have a decadent treat and actually go to the cinema to see something we want to see and not a kids film! Slightly mad that we have to come across the Atlantic Ocean to do that – but it felt like a lovely treat none the less.

Having said I was perhaps the last person to have read Gone Girl – I should have clarified that the husband hasn’t! He doesn’t do books – so I thought it would be interesting to see what we both thought afterwards.

It was pretty true to the book – but there were some chunks missing (as is always the case) – and like the book I didn’t particularly like any of the characters – so I guess it shows the actors got that right!! I felt that the film seemed a bit slow – but I wondered if that was because I knew what was coming – so was wishing it away – but having discussed it with the husband, he felt the same. So I guess the film was just kind of slow!!

One thing I did realise – is how much we rely on Sky+ (this was the most wonderful invention between my first pair and second pair of kids – I remember weeping when the oldest was a few months old because ‘I just want to watch Dalziel and Pascoe’ – and back then you watched it in real time, or waited for it all to have been recorded to play back – how retro!) but we quite often utilise the pause facility now to have a brief chat on what’s happening (or more likely for me to explain what’s going on because husband has been working at the same time and not paying full attention!) not being able to do that in the cinema felt a bit disappointing!!

Just like the book, the twists and turns were great – and it would appeal to both sexes.

So all in all – a decent film – but not an amazing film. There endeth my first film review on this blog! Do not fear, there won’t be many – there will be far more book ones!!

Sh*t happens

4 years ago (according to Timehop – I bloody love Timehop!) we bought our first Caroline Shotton painting entitled ‘Sh*t happens’!  The big kids were 5 and 7 at the time, thought the title of the painting was HILARIOUS and no doubt repeated it at completely inappropriate times!

sh-t-happens-13281

Since then we’ve bought a few lot of her other pieces – lovingly called ‘cow pictures’ by the little ones.

I found out that Caroline was doing a personal appearance at Castle Galleries in Solihull last month, and the eldest and I found that one of her paintings ‘Best Dad’ was for sale.  Husband’s birthday is October – so we thought it would be the PERFECT present!  All was going well, I’d plotted with the lovely Carole from the gallery and I’d paid for the painting, designed a perfect dedication, and then was going to sneak back and pick the painting up after the event so he was none the wiser.

All was going well when we arrived at the gallery – and the kids enjoyed milkshakes and cupcakes…..

Milkshake Cupcake

And they were allowed to choose new cow paintings for their rooms (extravagant I know – but it’s an investment – and looks so much nicer than a poster from Smash Hits or Bunty!!)

Then – husband spotted ‘Best Mum’ and announced that I had to be given that one.  Obviously I started weeping (did I mention that when the kids had milkshake I’d had champagne?!) at the sentiment (although my son did point out I was the only Mum he had – so had to be the best one – throwing on its head the ‘you’re my best son’ that I use on him!!) and the fact that my birthday surprise was usurped and so I’d have to think of something else!  (Given husband’s favourite 40th present was his Bissell carpet cleaner – this is not a joke –  I suspect it may have to be a household appliance now!)

Weeping

Then we got to meet the very lovely Caroline in person – and she dedicated the back of all of our purchases (and she’s very good at drawing cows in her dedications too – I am always well impressed by people’s artistic skills being an accountant myself!!)  Here’s a picture of me and the eldest with Caroline – and some of our paintings (all protected ready to leave – they’re not some weird, modern blue frames!)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA]

So cake, milkshake, champagne, a lovely artist and our favourite gallery made for a fabulous (if slightly expensive!) afternoon.

We just need to make sure we avoid Mell Square for a bit now, so we’re not tempted to add to the Paul Horton or Shazia collections too…………

De de de de, de de de……

Tonight is the night – sequins and spandex ready – Strictly is BACK!!

SCD

I have loved Strictly Come Dancing back since the very first series – where Natasha Kaplinsky and Brendan Cole rumba-ed on (and allegedly off) the dancefloor to lift the glitterball trophy! For the last few years eldest daughter and I have been glued to every episode together and have even been to the live shows – and I suspect another couple of little girls will want to watch this year (although not tonight – it’s on too late for a 4 year old who starts reception tomorrow morning!) With the advent of social media – I also like watching it in the company of Twitter – where dances / outfits / fights with the judges are replayed in real time and discussed at length!

The line up this year looks fab – something for everyone?! And the fact that Brucey has (FINALLY!) retired and been replaced by Claudia Winkleman means there will no longer be the cringey links – hoorah! I have to confess to a little bit of a girl crush on Claudia – and would like to be her friend!! Let’s face it – there aren’t many high profile shows presented by two 40+ female presenters!!

Tonight is just the launch show, where the celebrities get partnered with their dancers (who now are mostly celebrities in their own right!) – and we have to wait until 27 September for the show proper – but a quick fix tonight can see me through for a few more weeks!

I really want to become famous just so I can go on Strictly and learn to dance, wear lovely outfits and get fit in the process – but in the short term, I will just have to live vicariously through my TV screen and maybe do some more Fitsteps classes!

So everybody – ‘Keeeeeeep dancing’!

Mama, I’m a big ‘blogger’ now!

This afternoon I had to buy an emergency pair of shoes (Superdry blue flip flops, very comfortable and quite substantial for a basic flip flop) due to the other new pair of shoes I was wearing (Next gorgeous sparkly pumps) for the first time were rubbing at the back on both feet.

This afternoon I also had to photograph the shoes whilst sitting on a shopping centre toilet as I knew I wanted to blog about this.

Shoes

I think I now qualify as a proper blogger……….

Sweets for my sweets, sugar for my honey – and cake for my friends and family!

My Dad used to work for a silver company (Birmingham is renowned for silversmithery – I may have just made up that word?!?)  They used to sell to jewellers, department stores – and even Tiffany (the luxury jeweller rather than batwing wearing 80s postrel). At Christmas time they would send their customers presents – and one year despatched Fortnum and Mason stilton cheeses to people.  In the New Year a customer in Japan wrote back thanking them for the ‘cake’ that they’d sent!!  They must have thought it went very mouldy in transit – poor cheese!!

Now one of my friends sends cakes by post – and they always arrive in tip top condition and beautifully packaged – and could never ever be mistaken for stinky cheese!!!  Bee set up  the Very Smart Cookie Company sending mail order cakes around the UK.  Given I am not renowned for my baking (or actually any cooking type activities) this has been a godsend – so far I have:

  • Ordered cakes for us at home – just to try out the service (don’t tell my personal trainer!). The kids have loved them – so much so that we had melt down from the 2 and 4 year olds in our local cafe yesterday as the carrot cake wasn’t like Bee’s!
  • Had the sticky toffee pudding as dessert when we’ve had guests (everyone liked the ‘lightness’ of it)
  • Requested a box to the holiday cottage we were staying in last October half term in Devon.  A warmed piece of salted caramel chocolate chip cookie bar with ice cream made up for the torrential rain outside!
  • Sent boxes ahead to my sister’s house when we were invading for the weekend as my food contribution (it was a chocolate selection box – and everything went down a treat!)
  • Took the chocolate chip orange drizzle cake with me for a dress fitting for my 40th birthday (thank goodness for the corset they also made!)
  • Purchased a box for the aforementioned sister when she was stuck at home with a broken ankle (apparently it was worth getting off the sofa and hopping to the door for the postman for – high praise indeed!)
  • Procured special mother’s and father’s day boxes (unsurprisingly for my Mum and Dad) which were selection boxes with added extras (daffs / chocolates / sparkles / hand written cards) – they went down very well, and 2 of everything meant the parentals didn’t have to fight over them!!
  • Posted to a friend who was in the midst of a family crisis when I felt pretty helpless and wanted them to know I was thinking of them (this was specifically nut free – and I know gluten free and dairy free options are also available – so don’t be afraid to ask!)
  • Dispatched one to a (mad!) friend who was running the London marathon – I’d envisaged it for carb loading pre race – but she saved it as a celebration and ate some of it in the car on the way home!
  • And perhaps my very favourite (see my very first post To Blog or Not To Blog) ‘The Boozy Box’ – Gin and Tonic Drizzle, Rum and Banana Cake, Black Forest Tiffin and Di Sorono and Almond Frangipane Tart.  It was as amazing as it sounds (although I subbed the Rum and Banana Cake for more G&T drizzle – as everyone knows banana is the devil’s food!!)

I’m pretty sure there will be plenty more cake sending opportunities very soon!  Most people love cake (I certainly do – which is fairly evident – in the paraphrased words of Shakira ‘these padded hips don’t lie!!’) – so go and have a sneaky peak at the Facebook page – you won’t be disappointed!!  Unless you live outside the UK –  then you will be – sorry…….

(Now, in an attempt to sound like a ‘proper’ Blogger, I have not been paid (in cash or cake!) for this review – I just want to spread the love!)
